Columbia was once an important shipping point and is now popular as a boating center.
Sportsmen use Columbia as a year-round base to fish the waters of Albemarle Sound and the improved waterfront provides access to downtown shops and restaurants. Within a few blocks of the municipal marina there are an array of restaurant choices as well as a pharmacy, banks (with ATM), a hardware store and a Post Office.
