At one point Port Sanilac was known as “Bark Shanty” because the townspeople tanned bark on the beach in the 1840s. After citizens petitioned for a more dignified name, it was changed to Sanilac in honor of a great Wyandot chief.
The downtown is only a few blocks away offering groceries, a Post Office and the oldest hardware store in Michigan, Raymond Hardware, which was established in 1850 (810-622-9991). Activities in the area include taking a tour of the picturesque Port Sanilac Lighthouse (810-750-9236) and shipwreck diving.
